The Austin Texas band Tulum began in 1985 at the restaurant El Arroyo when Carlton and Joel Crutcher (age 23 and 21) were introduced to Mark Macias by El Arroyo co-worker Howard Burke, guitarist for the punk band "Not For Sale." Tulum began rehearsing with Carlton on vocals, Joel on guitar, Mark Macias on bass and Mark's friend Roger Bohuslav on guitar. Carlton's lyrics were inspired by Carlos Castaneda, Jim Morrison, The 13th Floor Elevators and punk/hardcore bands like Black Flag, The Germs, Scratch Acid and the Butthole Surfers. Joel's guitar style and song writing were inspired by the Antones blues scene, the local punk bands and the psychedelic experiennce in general. Mark Macias had played in the band Contructive Noise and was influenced by bands like Joy Division and Gang of Four.
Tulum finally got a drummer in Jim Moore and lost second guitarist Roger Bohuslav. The cassette release "Vibrating Moods" was recorded by Not For Sale bassist Mark Chester and Tulum got their first show opening for Faith No More at the Austin club "The Beach." Mark was injured in an auto accident a few days before the show so Tulum couldn't play and drummer Jim Moore soon quit and was replaced by Elegant Doormats drummer John Foxworth. This lineup began an intensive regimen of rehearsals and playing local shows and parties culminating in a show in El Paso opening for Jody Foster's Army (JFA). In the Fall of '86 Tulum recorded it's second cassette "Voluptuous Astral Freeze" again engineered by Mike Chester at the Rabid Cat practice space that was shared by Scratch Acid and Not For Sale. Tulum received a half page writeup in the punk/hardcore magazine "Maximum Rock'n'Roll" which lead to correspondence with Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys that lasted for many years. Voluptuous Astral Freeze was released on a cassette compilation "Vormeja Kotelossa" on the label "Absolutely Sweet" from Finland. In January of '87 Mark Macias was replaced by Scott Telles of the Elegant Doormats and the band name was changed from Tulum to ST 37; who are still an active band today. Tulum attempted to combine the punk hardcore sound and philosophy of the day with the spiritual insights inspired by the 60s and the psychedelic experience.
